Love the moment. Flowers grow out of dark moments. Therefore, each moment is vital. It affects the whole. Life is a succession of such moments and to live each, is to succeed. – Corita Kent
What defines you?
This is a question people are asked everyday by friends or family, during job interviews or something they ask themselves.
We have the elevator speech: My name is Chelsea Hagan. I’m a third-year honors student at Ohio State double majoring in strategic communication and political science. Currently, I’m an Account Executive for Ohio State’s student-run PR firm, The PRactice. Also, I’m a member of PRSSA. During the end of my second-year and beginning of my third-year, I was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Politics and International Affairs. This summer I will be interning in the Diversity Communications Department with General Motors in Detroit, MI. In the future, I hope to work in corporate communications and to one day run my own PR firm.
But, is that really what defines me? In a job interview it may fill the response, “Tell me a little about yourself.” However, this is really only the surface.
So what really defines me?
My experiences.
As you noticed, I started this About Me section off with a quote. A quote that has defined how I see myself and the world around me.
To really get to know me would be to get to know the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. I love telling my story, but for the sake of space and time I’ll save it for another time. If you want to know what defines me, you can always ask.
And as much as I love telling my story, I love getting the opportunity to tell someone else’s story.
Asking someone what defines them can yield interesting responses. You can learn about their childhood, their family life, their successes or even their failures. All of the experiences they share tell a story, which, in my opinion is always worth sharing.
Words have a lot of power. Despite all my aspirations and goals in the future, I hope I am able to tell stories about myself and the world around me in whatever career I ultimately pick.
